Viagra was the first pill to be approved for treatment in Australia, but a new study shows it could be an even more dangerous form of erectile dysfunction.
It was discovered that a group of men with erectile dysfunction, could take the new drug and cause serious side effects when they started it.
One of the men, a 41-year-old man, was treated with Viagra before he developed a rash in his face that he could not explain. He had no other medical problems.
The other men, the 40-year-old study author Dr Tony Shulman, said: “You’ve probably seen them a few times before, but they’re not that dangerous.”
The study, which was funded by the Men’s Health Fund, looked at about 10,000 people taking the drug for about a year to look at their health, according to the Health and Human Services Department.
The men took either 25mg or 50mg of the drug on a daily basis for about three months.
They were told that if they stopped taking the drug they could get better, but if they continued taking it for another two to three months, they had to see their GP.
Dr Shulman, who also studied Viagra, said: “It’s very important to note that these men were taking the drug for two years, which means they could be taking this medication for up to six months at a time, depending on the severity of the condition they were in.”
Viagra was given to a group of about 40 men in New Zealand, who took it for about five years.
The study, published in the New Zealand Journal of Medical Research, was the first to look at whether people taking the drug would have any problems.
Dr Shulman said: “We don’t know how this drug will react, but there are probably some people who might react differently, or they may be taking the drug at the same time and taking it on the same days they’re taking it.”
The researchers looked at about 10,000 people, with symptoms of erectile dysfunction and asked them to take the drug on a daily basis for three months.
They also asked about other conditions that could have caused the side effects, like back pain or a runny nose.
Dr Shulman said: “We’re not aware of any studies to suggest that these side effects of Viagra could be caused by the drug.”
Viagra is used to treat a condition that is caused by a lack of sexual desire in men, such as impotence or erectile dysfunction.
Researchers have known about the drug for a few years, but a new study was published in the journalJAMA Internal Medicinein June. It found the drug caused serious problems in people taking it for three months.
Dr Shulman said: “The most important thing is that these men were taking this medication for a period of time.”
He added: “The men taking this medication should be monitored closely to see if they have any side effects that could be caused by taking the medication, as well as any other drugs, or medicines that you take.
“It is very important that this drug be used by all men who are trying to get an erection, regardless of their medical condition.”
The research is funded by the New Zealand Men’s Health Fund and was published in theBritish Medical Journalin 2006.
Dr Shulman, who has also studied Viagra, said: “It is very important to note that these men were taking the drug for two years, which means they could be taking this medication for up to six months, depending on the severity of the condition they were in.
